History

The Pontotoc County Historical Society acquired the Pontotoc Post Office Building and opened the Town Square Post Office and Museum in August 1998.  The Town Square Post Office is the only full service vintage contract postal facility in the United States.  The lobby contains a mural of De Soto and three Chickasaw chiefs having Christmas dinner in 1540.

This mural, painted by Joseph Pollet of New York, also represents the wedding of Juan Ortiz and Sa-owana, an Indian princess.  Historians record it as the first Christian wedding in America and was performed by a Catholic priest.
